You all know me. Lover of lipsticks. I probably own more lipsticks than I do clothes… #NoRegrets. Bourjois is a high street brand that everyone knows and loves, their new lipstick range: Rouge Velvet The Lipstick* is currently all over my Instagram feed and d’ya know what? I’m glad they are!
Bourjois was one of the first high street brands I tried when I first delved into the world of beauty. I remember their little pots of baked eyeshadow. Specifically the pink, silver and blue ones. Their chocolate scented bronzer was also to die for. God, I’m feeling all nostalgic now!
ANYWAY, Bourjois have recently launched a new 12 shade lipstick range: Rouge Velvet* The shade range is just stunning and right up my street. Whilst I do have a major soft spot for brown shades, I do love a good pink from time to time. It ranges from the more subtle every day nude brown and pinks, to the ever bold and daring bright pink, to the classic red and the deeper Autumnal shades like purples and deep browns.
The shape of these are quite interesting, dubbed the ‘teardrop’ shaped bullet, it’s supposed to provide an easier, more precise application. I can imagine this being fantastic for someone who doesn’t have an overly obvious lip line. BUT, for someone like me – I have quite sharp upper lip features which I like to round off (cos I hate my top lip) so I did have to make sure I angled the teardrop accurately to make my lips look decent. This will echo what I said on my Instagram stories when I did quick little updates on my stories. That’s nothing massive though and don’t let it put you off purchasing these. This is just mostly down to my personal preference and because I struggle to apply with the ‘teardrop’ style lipstick.
The shades are as follows:
01 – Hey Nude – A perfect, pale brown.
02 – Flaming Rose – Probably one of my favourite shades and so ideal for the everyday. It’s a gorgeous, subtle pink that looks so natural.
03 – Hyppink Chic – Also another favourite. Another nude pink *drools*
04 – Hip Hip Pink – A more obvious pink but still not in your face.
05 – Brique-A-Brac – Berry pink
06 – Abrico’ Dabra – A perfect orange… Gimme.
07 – Joli Carmin’ois – A fiery, burnt orange with hints of red.
08 – Rubi’s Cute – The perfect, classic red.
09 – Fuchsia Botte – If this isn’t the most in your face shade of pink, I don’t know what is. (It’s beaut btw)
10 – Magni-Fig – A gorgeous plum, perfect for this A/W
11 – Berry Formidable – A deep red berry/wine with subtle blends of purple.
12 – Brunette – Dark brown which I surprisingly love!
As you can see from the swatches above, the colour range is wonderful. This was with just one quick swipe across my arm too, I barely put any pressure on the lipsticks. The pigments, wow. Need I say more? I was so shocked. I didn’t expect that sort of pigmentation and product transfer from this range. So I was super impressed with that. Even the deeper shades, the pigmentation was not lost at all – as with some brands, you do tend to find that they dry out patchy but nothing with this! It really seems fool proof! I think this is one of the best pigmentations in a lipstick I’ve experienced in the last 6 months. I am in loveeeeeee.
Oh my god, the formula is something else too! It’s very hydrating and moisturising on the lips. I was really happy about this because sometimes, lipsticks can be pretty drying on the lips. Especially when it’s a matte formula. However, these feel just as nice on your lips 8 hours later as they did when you first applied them! There must’ve been so much time and effort put into this range to perfect the formula because they have really nailed it!
How does the range handle food and drink?
I’m pretty impressed! Not gonna lie, I didn’t have high expectations for these in terms of durability on my lips. How wrong was I? There was a little bit of ‘coming away’ on my inner lips but that’s to be expected and that was after consuming a chippy tea *drools*. It wasn’t obviously noticeable anyway. I’ve worn these lipsticks every day since receiving them and they have lasted so incredibly well on my lips. For example, on Saturday I applied Flaming Rose at around 8.30am and it was still looking pretty good on my lips 12 hours later. This was without the primer liner that it comes with. I have also worn the lipstick with the primer and it probably just prolongs the wear around the inner lips and in the corners. So I do think that having the primer liner is beneficial to have.
All in all, I am so bloody impressed with the Bourjois Rouge Velvet* range. I am in awe of the products! I love the formula, the pigments, the shade range – practically everything! I’m struggling to find much fault other than the teardrop style bullet but that is largely just down to my personal preference. The Rouge Velvet: The Lipstick range is available at both Superdrug and Boots so if you get the chance, do check them out (especially Flaming Rose and Brunette because omg they are bae) If you want further swatches, inspo or reviews – definitely check out the hashtag: #VelvetTheLipstick!
