With summer just around the corner, it’s time for the bright and bold lips to make a return! I love bold lips, I think they really make a statement when you wear them. Here are my five favourite lipsticks for rocking bright and bold this summer!
You’re probably looking at this photo and thinking… Katie… you only have orange and red shades in here. Well, I know but whilst these shades may look similar, they’re actually not! They all provide their own spin on the bright lip craze. Don’t get me wrong, I have been loving the purples and dark lips this A/W and even into Spring but now it’s time to move my warmer and brighter shades forward! Although I’m 90% sure I’ll still be wearing purples and dark lips at some point this summer!
It was quite hard to narrow it down to just 5 shades, when I own in excess of 60-70 lipsticks (I’ve recently had a lipstick clear out).
In the end, I opted for these shades:
- NARS Audacious Matte Lipstick – Lava
- Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick – Spicy
- Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick – Serafine
- Kylie Cosmetics Mini Mattes – Mary Jo K
- Max Factor – Pink Brandy
First up: Max Factor – Pink Brandy which is definitely the lightest shade in this post. This is really ideal for anyone wanting to rock the bright lips this summer but aren’t feeling too confident wearing a bold colour. I would describe this as a coral pink. It’s quite a sheer shade too. Whilst the staying power isn’t the most amazing in the world – it still holds out pretty well. The lipstick itself is super creamy and the application is effortless. This was definitely my quickest application of the bunch! Ideal if you’re just taking a nice summer stroll or just chilling in your garden but you still want bold lips!
Next up is the NARS Audacious Matte Lipstick in the shade Lava. A lot of people think that this is red but in actual fact, Lava is a deep burnt orange and of course it’s matte (yay). This is the first NARS product I ever tried and my love for the brand only intensified from there… I picked up this little baby in Duty Free in Manchester Airport before heading to Florida so I’m not entirely sure on the price (sorry).
I love the packaging of NARS products and the lipstick didn’t fail – the minimalist black packaging just screams at me! Also, I love that the have the brand name imprinted in their lipsticks. The application in general was relatively easy. I think I’ve become so accustomed to liquid lipstick application that when I do head back to the original lipstick style, it can be a little bit of a struggle. That’s nothing bad on the lipstick though, it’s just me! I can’t wait to rock this shade in the summer in the beer gardens!
Anastasia Beverly Hills is a brand that I absolutely adore.
When I went to Florida last summer I naturally hit Sephora, spent half my spending money and walked out with a rather light purse but a very heavy shopping bag! I opted for three shades from Anastasia Beverly Hills, one of them being called ‘Sarafine’ – looks like the standard red lip right? It’s not! Sarafine is much darker than other red lips I find. The application is wonderful but there is a slight bit of bleed. I think that’s just me though – I’m yet to find a red lip liner that ticks all the boxes! Once it dries, it does not budge – it was a bugger to remove! This is a matte liquid lipstick and we all know I’m a huge lover of all things matte. They’re not drying on the lips either which I was surprised about!
Another Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick but this time, in the shade ‘Spicy’. As the name suggests, it is a fiery orange. You definitely will stand out from the crowds wearing this beauty. This is probably the brightest orange lipstick I own. You can see the difference between Lava and Spicy – Lava is a deep burnt orange but Spicy is just full on orange! Again, the staying power for this was also amazing. I have worn this a couple times out and received nothing but compliments! This is a shade I would definitely repurchase. If I were to go to any festivals – this would probably be my staple lip colour.
Finally, we have Kylie Cosmetics – Mary Jo K. A shade I have desperately wanted to try since its initial release but I just never got round to purchasing it. When Kylie Jenner released the Valetines Collection – I saw this was in the mini mattes and I knew I had to get it! I have a review of the mini mattes that you can check out here! They describe Mary Jo as the classic red lip and I can see why. It’s truly a stunning red. Named after the Jenner/Kardashian grandma – MJ – who ALWAYS wears a bold red lip whenever she’s on their show… I’m a real KUWTK fan by the way! The Kylie Cosmetics formula is always a firm favourite of mine and it does not disappoint in Mary Jo. It’s not drying in the slightest and again – whenever I’ve worn this, I’ve received so many lovely comments.
Some people tend to shy away from bright and bold lip colours. I can see why, I used to be the exact same. I would worry that people are staring at me and judging me, just based on my choice of lip colour, silly right? But one day I just plucked up the courage to rock the bright and bold lips and I’ve never turned back since!
